Say Goodbye to the Bench Seat

When the 2013 Chevrolet Impala goes out of production to make way for a completely redesigned 2014, it will take with it an American classic -- the bench seat.

The Impala is the last car that has bench seats as an option.

When they finally go, gone will be the days when teenagers would squeeze in elbow to elbow. They will also lose the ability to stretch out or turn the front seat into a little love shack.

"There is certain nostalgia for bench seats, like being able to snuggle up with your date at a drive-in movie, and some customers still like them," GM Design Director Clay Dean says in a statement. "You never know, we might see bench seats re-emerge someday, possibly in very small cars like the EN-V urban mobility concept vehicle, in which the feeling of open space may be very desirable."

GM, in noting the passing, said few buyers bought them anymore. Only one in 10 Impala buyers chose the $195 option last year on the LS and LT models.

"A lot of people prefer bucket seats because they're sporty, even in models that aren't sports cars," says Dean. "Our customers also appreciate having the center console as a convenient place to store their phone and other personal items."

Winter Driving Tips

Severe weather can be both frightening and dangerous for automobile travel. Here are some tips for driving in the snow:

- Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don't try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.

- Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning - nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.

- The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.

- Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.

- Don't stop if you can avoid it. There's a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.

- Don't power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible.

- Don't stop going up a hill. There's nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.

- Stay home. If you really don't have to go out, don't. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don't tempt fate: If you don't have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Review

MAC MORRISON: Hyundai has been making adjustments to the Genesis coupe since it launched, and dare I say this is the best car I've ever experienced from the manufacturer's lineup. The reworked engine and suspension -- power is up by 42 hp, while torque increases by 29 lb-ft, with stiffened springs and dampers and reworked antiroll bars and suspension bushings -- have transformed this Genesis coupe into a legitimate driver's car that is, finally, true fun to drive hard.

Indeed, the normally aspirated V6 is quite torquey, and it rumbles with a deep voice at every prod of the throttle. The car is quick, and has more than enough power to make it a throttle-steering delight if you deactivate traction and stability control fully. The steering has a nice weight to it, and I found it quite easy to place the car precisely where I wanted it to go.

World's Oldest Ford Vehicle Returns Home to Kick Off Henry Ford 150th Celebration in 2013

A key part of Ford Motor Company's heritage returns home as a Model A built in 1903 is again with the Ford family, kicking off the yearlong celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of company founder Henry Ford.

Considered the oldest surviving Ford vehicle, the 1903 Model A was unveiled today to Ford Motor Company employees by Executive Chairman Bill Ford, who purchased the vehicle at an auction in October.

"The timing was perfect to bring this key part of Ford heritage back to the family as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of my great-grandfather's birth and his vision to improve people's lives by making cars affordable for the average family," said Bill Ford. "His vision to build cars that are reasonably priced, reliable and efficient still resonates and defines our vision today as well."

MotorCities National Heritage Area and the Henry Ford Heritage Association teamed up with more than 30 Henry Ford-related collaborators to coordinate the yearlong celebration of events. These activities, highlighting Ford's legacy, contributions and influence, include tours, educational programming, dramatic re-enactments, lectures, integration and special events at auto shows and more.
